130,000 people<\/a>\u00a0fled the island. More than one-third of them\u00a0moved to Florida<\/a>.\r\n\r\nSeventeen years after Hurricane Katrina,\u00a030,000 people from New Orleans remain<\/a>\u00a0in Houston, and tens of thousands more are displaced around the state and the remainder of the country. The city has regained only\u00a080% of its pre-storm population<\/a>.\r\n\r\nA\u00a0February 2022 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a>\u00a0found that: \u201cOver the next 30 years, 143 million people are likely to be uprooted by rising seas, drought, searing temperatures and other climate catastrophes.\u201d Where is everyone going?\r\n\r\nMany people are displaced within their own countries. For example, the World Bank anticipates that Bangladesh will have at least 19 million people internally displaced because of climate-related disasters by 2050. Others must flee their home nation, essentially becoming refugees. Despite its common usage, \u201cclimate refugees\u201d are not a recognized class of people and are not protected under\u00a0international refugee laws.<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe Center for Disaster Philanthropy is hosting a webinar to provide funders with information about the\u00a0issue of climate migration<\/a>, focusing on the new communities and countries that climate-displaced individuals find themselves in through planning or circumstance, provide funders with information about the\u00a0issue of climate migration<\/a>, focusing on the new communities and countries that climate-displaced individuals find themselves in through planning or circumstance.
